Minnesotans supportive of iron mining, survey shows

Ninety-three percent of Minnesotans believe the state should continue to mine iron ore, according to results from the 2016 Minnesota State Survey.

The survey was conducted by the Minnesota Center for Survey Research at the University of Minnesota which reached out to 806 Minnesotans age 18 and up via telephone between October 2016 and April 2017. Topics covered in the survey included: quality of life, arts, AARP, environment, Black Lives Matter, data practices, transportation planning, and the iron mining industry.

It’s clear that Minnesotans value iron mining in Minnesota,” said Iron Mining Association President Kelsey Johnson. “This furthers our belief that we mine iron better than any other place in the world.  We remain dedicated to our communities, responsibly producing iron and innovating the new ways to mine iron.”

The survey also found 56% of Minnesotans are aware of how they use products derived from iron mining in their everyday lives.

“We have our work cut out for us to educate the other 44% of people about how they use iron and steel – like their vehicles, appliances, and construction materials,” Johnson said. “When Americans are among the largest consumers of iron and steel in the world, it’s important that people understand how vital Minnesota’s iron mining is for their daily lives,”
